Health Share vs Traditional Health Insurance
Health share programs and health insurance look similar in concept — both involve regular monthly payments and help with medical costs — but they're fundamentally different. Health shares are not insurance and are not regulated as insurance. That distinction matters legally, financially, and in terms of who they fit.
| Criterion | Health Share Program | Traditional Health Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Member-funded cost-sharing community; members contribute monthly and share eligible expenses | State-regulated insurance contract between you and a carrier |
| Regulatory status | Not insurance. Not regulated by state Departments of Insurance. | Heavily regulated — state DOI oversight, ACA rules, contractual obligations |
| Pre-existing conditions | Varies by program; often waiting periods or limited sharing | Required to cover under ACA |
| Monthly cost shape | Generally lower than insurance for healthy individuals and families | Generally higher; rates vary by age, location, and plan tier |
| Provider network | None — members can see any direct-pay provider | Network restrictions; out-of-network costs significantly higher |
| Cost certainty | Programs share eligible costs per their guidelines; no contractual guarantee | Carrier is contractually obligated to pay per the policy |
| Tax treatment | Member contributions generally not pre-tax | Premiums may be pre-tax through employer or HSA-eligible plans |
| Best fit | Healthy individuals and families comfortable with a non-insurance arrangement, often faith-aligned communities | Anyone with significant pre-existing conditions, full regulatory protection needed, ACA-mandate compliance |
Important: Sedera Access+ is not available in CA, NM, PA, VT, or WA. Other health share programs have their own state exclusions — verify availability before enrolling. Health share programs are not insurance and are not regulated as insurance. They are not subject to the consumer protections that apply to insurance.
